Dal Tadka Soup
Soft toor dal simmered with tomato and turmeric, finished with a sizzling cumin and garlic tempering.

Thin the dal with a bit more hot water and it eats like a soup. The tempering poured on at the end carries all the aroma.
Ingredients
- Toor dal, dry3/4 cup
- Tomato1 large
- Onion1 medium
- Garlic3 cloves
- Fresh ginger1 inch
- Green chili1
- Ground turmeric1 tsp
- Cumin seeds1 tsp
- Sunflower or other neutral oil1 tbsp
- Water4 cups
- Lemon juice1 tbsp
- Fresh cilantro2 tbsp chopped
- Red chili powder1/2 tsp
- Saltto taste
Steps
- Rinse the dal and cook it with the water, half the onion, the tomato, turmeric, ginger and chili for about 30 minutes until completely soft. Mash it lightly.
- Heat the oil in a small pan, add the cumin seeds and let them crackle.
- Add the remaining onion and the sliced garlic and cook until golden, then stir in the chili powder.
- Pour the tempering over the dal, add salt, lemon juice and cilantro and stir.
- Thin with hot water if you like a looser soup.
